O’Connell, who’ll turn 25 in September, didn’t take a top-30 visit to the Raiders’ facility before the draft, but he still made a lasting impression on general manager Dave Ziegler, coach Josh McDaniels and the rest of the front office throughout the scouting process.

It is a story of political brinkmanship, but it's also an intimate domestic drama, set against the backdrop of Churchill's prime-ministerial country home, Chequers his wartime retreat, Ditchley, where he and his entourage go when the moon is brightest and the bombing threat is highest and of course 10 Downing Street in London. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally-and willing to fight to the end. For the next twelve months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. On Winston Churchill's first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. That’s because the tiny outpost near Homer, where the Allbrights homestead (in real life, Hannah’s family runs a travel lodge in the same general area) has citizens who help one another and show up to share the work. This is the kind of book in which the Alaskan cabin is a horrible mess until, practically overnight, it’s fresh and clean - not easy without running water. Ernt has been moving his family around ever since he got home, looking for some kind of happy new start. But he has been “weird since the war,” which is about as clinical as “The Great Alone” gets, and he is this book’s designated bad guy. When “The Great Alone” begins, in 1974, Leni is 13 and her father is still reasonably sane. The book’s main character, Leni Allbright, is the daughter of a beautiful hippie mother, Cora, and a father, Ernt, who was a prisoner of war in Vietnam. The terrible troubles are completely one-note. Instead, she came up with “The Great Alone,” an Alaskan family drama that bears almost no surface resemblance to “The Nightingale.” It’s a heart-tugger written in borderline young adult style, combining terrible troubles with notes of overripe romance. That was “The Nightingale” (2015), based on a true story and centered on two sisters caught up in the French Resistance, and it was such a hard act to follow that Hannah says she wrote and discarded a novel she could have published next. Kristin Hannah has written more than 20 novels, but it took one monster hit to really put her on the map. Webb describes the training that helped him become a world class Operator in one of the most well trained organizations in the world. Like I always say, I love talking about great books, and this one fits that bill, so let’s jump right in:īrandon Webb details his life from being kicked off a boat by his father as a teenager to rising through the ranks to become a Tier One Operator in the United States Navy. Again, I read this book a while ago, but I loved the idea of having some patriotism this month and I wanted to include a review. This time, I wanted to share my thoughts on Brandon Webb’s thrilling memoir, The Making of a Navy SEAL. Let’s get back to the patriotism of the month by discussing yet another amazing military story. Above all, they stand as an intense personal narrative of artistic development and a unique account of the process of creation. Engaging candidly and movingly with his religious struggles, his ill-fated search for love, his attacks of mental illness and his relation with his brother Theo, the letters contradict the popular myth of van Gogh as an anti-social madman and a martyr to art, showing instead a man of great emotional and spiritual depths. Few artists' letters are as self-revelatory as Vincent van Gogh's, and this selection, spanning his artistic career, sheds light on every facet of the life and work of this complex and tortured man. In this Penguin Classics edition, the letters are selected and edited by Ronald de Leeuw, and translated by Arnold Pomerans in Penguin Classics. A new selection of post-impressionist painter Vincent Van Gough's letters, The Letters of Vincent van Gogh put a human face on one of the most haunting figures in modern Western culture. Families will love to spot the literary references and will also be reminded of The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. There was a surprising amount of both humor and depth in this tale ( you'd need it to balance out the RATS - did I mention their are RATS?) and if you have a son who has succumbed to the "fairy tales are for girls" disease, this will be a good book to start his healing process. Then the RATS show up, followed by a strange man who promises to get rid of them for a price - Rudi's gold coin. He tries to return it so that the witch will not bring down a curse on the village, but he loses it in the snow. Rudi finds a coin on the mountain but it turns out to belong to the witch. I suppose that is because as a kid I found the story of children being taken away by a piper quite disturbing! I had a Kate Greenway illustrated copy of the tale and even her pastoral drawings couldn't reconcile me to the tale! Anyhoo. Before I picked up this book I would not have thought "The Pied Piper of Hamlin" would be good material for a fairy tale retelling. “A thrilling adventure about found families, ancient magic, and stories that linger." ―Shannon Chakraborty, author of The City of Brass And, in a world where story is reality and illusion is truth, Loulie will discover that everything-her enemy, her magic, even her own past-is not what it seems, and she must decide who she will become in this new reality.
